|In 2002, 40,552 children were referred for investigation of child abuse and neglect in Colorado. 7,570 children were substantiated or indicated as abused or neglected in Colorado. Of these children, 44.9% were neglected, 25.0% were physically abused.9,209 children in Colorado lived apart from their families in out-of-home care. 50.0% Caucasian children, 12.9% black children, 32.6% Hispanic children. A 57% increase of abused and neglected cases from the year 2000.In 2002, an estimated 39,000 children ages 12–17, and 390,000 adults 18 and older, were dependent on or abusing illicit drugs or alcohol.
In 2003, more than 31,178 Colorado grandparents had primary custody caring for their grandchildren.
In 2004, over 18,000 Colorado teens ages 16–19 were high school dropouts, over 15% of young adults ages 18–24 were not enrolled in school and were not working.
The last gang census released publicly by Denver police in 2003, counted 220 gangs amounting to over 14,000 gang members city-wide. 1,176 under 18 years of age were in correctional facilities in Colorado.
In 2003, a rate of 2.33 per 100,000 youth, age 20 and younger, committed suicide.
Each year in Colorado over 10,000 children are victims of abuse and neglect.
